Introduction

Stuart Fernie worked as a teacher of French for 35 years in a small secondary school in the Highlands of Scotland.

Below, you will find materials used during my time in teaching. It struck me that use could still be made of some of the materials I used, potentially by both teachers and students. These are broadly speaking simple Word documents used to reinforce learning in the classroom.

Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 contain vocabulary linked to contexts and situations. The levels range from beginners through intermediate to advanced.

Section 1 deals with S1 (first year of secondary school)

Section 2 deals with S2 (second year of secondary school)

Section 3 deals with S3 (third year of secondary school)

Section 4 deals with National 5 (usually sat in fourth year)

Section 5 deals with Higher (usually sat in fifth year)

In terms of level of study, S1 and S2 may be considered beginners to intermediate
(based on “Accès” and “Studio 1”)

S3 may be considered intermediate
(based on “Studio 2”)

National 5 and Higher may be considered intermediate to advanced
(based on “Studio 3” and materials created to reinforce the “Higher Still” materials in Scotland)

You will also find brief grammar notes with examples, followed by exercises in sections 6 and 7.

Finally, in section 8, there is a series of notes on films I used in the classroom to stimulate engagement and discussion, and as a basis for written reviews or essays.
